What materials are used to manufacture climbing holds?

At Chompers, we manufacture our climbing holds using high-purity resin reinforced with layered fibreglass, without any fillers or additives. You can learn more about our climbing hold materials here

A common industry trick is to dilute resin with fillers to reduce cost, we use a clean resin system. This results in a stronger, lighter, more consistent structure and a noticeably clearer, translucent finish rather than the cloudy appearance often seen in holds with fillers.

Our macros are built using a combination of fibreglass reinforcements, layered to achieve a 4–5mm thick shell across six layers. This creates a high strength-to-weight ratio, critical for large-format holds where both durability and manageable weight matter.

We also reinforce key stress areas, particularly around bolt zones, with additional fibreglass layers and integrate metal inserts that improve long-term reliability.

Our material choice is deliberate. Fibreglass allows us to produce large, lightweight macros that can handle high-impact, high-intensity climbing without compromising structural integrity.
